Rene’s Assessment

My take on developments in learning and technology

The report  “The Transition to Computer-Based Assessment – New Approaches to Skills Assessment and Implications for Large-scale Testing” has been published. The volume, which is based on a set of workshops that was held in Iceland in September 2008, was edited Julius Björnsson and Fritz Scheuerman. I think it gives a very broad and comprehensive overview of the current state of, and issues around, computer based assessment.

I would especially recommend The article on “CAT as a pedagogic tool” by Jakob Wandall, and “Issues in Computerized Ability Measurement: Getting out of the Jingle and Jangle Jungle” by Oliver Wilhelm.

It’s official, I gave up on Drupal. I’m sure it’s a great tool, but I just don’t really care for the steep learning curve that it demands. So I moved the wordpress blog to the root of the site, and that’s where it will stay for the time being. Apologies for all the messing around. Some of you may have received old posts reactivated in their feeds, and I am still going through all my old posts to make sure the internal links work as we speak. However, from now on the major moves should be over (even if just to allow me some time to check out why my oven chose the week before Christmas to break down…)

Thanks for your patience, and a merry Christmas.

Resolutions

Resolutions

I was attending the final keynote on the annual JISC conference in Birmingham, an engaging presentation by Tom Loosemore. He was discussing the BBC’s 15 principles of good web design, number 6 to be precise: The web is a conversation… join in!

Now the actual intent behind that was more about tone of voice and transparency, but reading the phrase literally before he elaborated did finally trigger my resolve to start a professional blog ( I already have a personal one, but I find I rarely use it, mainly because it lacks focus).

So, here it is!

I had some other names in mind before ‘René’s Assessment’, but these were already taken (most of those by people who abandoned them after a single post in 2004… rather annoying). Then again, this isn’t a bad name I suppose.
